Highlights 

With Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench, Spain got off to a flying start, causing havoc with one of their opening opportunities when Gavi's ferocious strike from distance was diverted aside by Joo Moutinho.

During the Group A2 opener, the 17-year-old was at the center of most of La Roja's most daring effort. After Portugal lost possession of the ball within their own half after 25 minutes, the Barcelona youngster sprinted forward and delivered an incisive ball to Pablo Sarabia, whose cross allowed the unmarked Morata to slot home via the post.

By that time, Portugal should have been in the lead. Raphael Guerreiro's aggressive running and deft trickery resulted in the wide man providing Rafael Leo inside the penalty area, only for the Milan striker to blast over the crossbar from close range after creating space with a beautiful first touch.

At halftime, Fernando Santos replaced Joo Moutinho with Rben Neves, a Wolves teammate, and Rafael Leo and Alvaro Morata exchanged chances in front of goal, with Unai Simón denying Portugal an equaliser before the Spain striker blasted wide after breaking free.

The excellent Gavi's retirement in the 81st minute occurred little over a minute before Portugal's equalizer. Both teams started with a point as Joo Cancelo sprinted down the right flank and found Ricardo Horta with a low delivery to the far post, the substitute scored his maiden international goal.
