Highlights

The visitors had chances and were in control for long stretches of the derby, but they were unable to capitalize on their advantage as Real Madrid consolidated their grip on the Spanish top flight table.

While Atleti started well, Real Madrid scored after only 16 minutes when Vinicius Junior broke away and crossed for Karim Benzema, who smashed a finish past Jan Oblak on the full volley.

Thibaut Courtois saved a freekick from Antoine Griezmann, but Atletico Madrid failed to produce anything against a Real Madrid side content to defend their lead.

Benzema was unable to continue in the second half due to injury, and Atleti substituted Joao Felix and Thomas Lemar.

The visitors rushed for an equalizer, but this only served to allow Real Madrid to score a second through Marco Asensio at the back.

Luis Suarez was brought in to give Atletico Madrid extra firepower, but even he couldn't save his club as Real Madrid won their tenth consecutive match in all competitions.
