Highlights

Denmark got off to a fast start in Saint-Denis, almost scoring before five minutes when Joakim Maehle hit the post after Kasper Dolberg snuck past the home defense inside the penalty area.

The holders' fear propelled them to action, if not cruelty. In a first half marked by the visitors' intense press and preparedness to shut down space, cutting off the supply line for last season's Ligue 1 top scorer and strike partner Karim Benzema, Kylian Mbappé's looping shot into Kasper Schmeichel's arms from distance was as near as Les Bleus came.

After appearing to pick up a knock shortly before the interval, Mbappé did not return for the second half, and his replacement, Christopher Nkunku, produced the moment of brilliance France required to break down Denmark's defense.

Benzema found the Leipzig livewire inside the penalty area after collecting a pass on the right, and his improvised return ball allowed the Real Madrid forward to befuddle his markers with a superb touch before putting a low finish past Schmeichel from close range.

That magnificent goal gave France the lead for a brief moment, only for Denmark's tenacious pursuit in enemy territory to pay off once more. Pierre-Emile Hjbjerg made it count by turning to send an appealing cross into the path of Andreas Cornelius, who had plenty of room to select his location with a volley that soared past Hugo Lloris.

N'Golo Kanté came close to restoring France's advantage, curling a wonderful effort against the post from distance, and Christian Eriksen couldn't hide his annoyance as Lloris blocked his shot when the playmaker appeared to be on his way to scoring. Cornelius had no such remorse, sprinting onto a Maehle through ball in the 86th minute and giving Lloris no chance.
