FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifiers: Match Highlights (1)

Mon, 15/11/2021 - 04:52

Let's recap the most exciting happenings in the matches of the FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifiers 3rd qualifying round.

1. South Korea 1 - 0 United Arab Emirates

  • Goal scorer(s): Hee-Chan Hwang (PEN) - 36’
  • Red card, yellow card: Woo-Young Jung (43’), Kyu-Seong Jo (44’), Gue-sung Cho (44’)

The Korean team entered the match against the UAE with the determination to win to increase the point gap with the chasing opponents as well as hope to get the top of Group A from Iran. After many relentless attacks, Paulo Bento's men finally opened the scoring with Hwang Hee-chan's cold penalty kick after Hwang In-Beom was fouled inside the box.

With 3 points obtained in this match, Korea has consolidated its second position in Group A with 11 points because in the same match, the third-ranked team, Lebanon, was defeated by Iran with a score of 2-1.

2. Saudi 0 - 0 Arabia

  • Goal scorer(s): None
  • Red card, yellow card: Abdulelah Ali Al-Amri (57’), Ali Al-Bulaihi (62’), Andrew Nabbout (89’)

The home team Australia worked hard to find a goal, but they were unable to do so against the solid defense of Saudi Arabia. Sharing points with the host, Saudi Arabia continues to lead Group B.

Draw with the final score 0-0 is really a pity for the host Australia. Meanwhile, 1 point is what the Saudi team is aiming for and they are still firmly at the top of Group B with 13 points. Australia is second in the table with 10 points.

3. Lebanon 1 - 2 Iran

  • Goal scorer(s): Soony Saad (37'), Sardar Azmoun (90'+1), Ahmad Noorollahi (90'+5)
  • Red card, yellow card: Saman Ghoddos (49’), Alireza Jahanbakhsh (51’), Sadegh Moharrami (84’)

Despite playing away from home, Iran, with a higher level, took the initiative to attack immediately after the opening whistle. However, in decisive situations, the strikers on the Iranian side all missed in a very unfortunate way.

In the 37th minute, taking advantage of the lack of concentration of the away team's defense, Soony Saad had an acceleration phase and finished a narrow-angle to burn Iran's net, opening the score 1-0 for Lebanon.

It was thought that Lebanon would defend its impressive result until the match ended, but the surprise suddenly happened. In the 90 + 1 minute, Azmoun shined to help Iran equalize the score 1-1. In the 90+5 minute, Nourollahi scored the winning goal to seal the 2-1 victory for the visitors. With 3 valuable points obtained against Lebanon, Iran continues to hold the top of Group A after 5 matches with 13 points.

4. Vietnam 0 - 1 Japan

  • Goal scorer(s): Ito (18')
  • Red card, yellow card: Nguyen Tuan Anh (7’), Hidemasa Morita (86’)

However, the students of Coach Park Hang Seo still had to submit to the superior level of Japan. In the 17th minute, Japan suddenly accelerated with a high-class middle attack. Minamino escaped very quickly to catch the ball from his teammates, before stretching smoothly for Ito to hit the goal and hit the net.

The score 1-0 was kept until the end of the match. Vietnam accepted the minimum loss to Japan and has yet to get any score in the 3rd Qualifier of the World Cup 2022.

5. China 1 - 1 Oman

  • Goal scorer(s): Wu Lei (21’), Amjad Al Harthi (75’)
  • Red card, yellow card: Zhang Linpeng (17’), Mohsin Al-Khaldi (90’+5)

The match between China and Oman was interesting from the first minute of the first half. After 3 minutes, Oman suddenly created the first opportunity when Issam Al Sabhi headed the ball wide and wide of the post.

The opening goal came in the 21st minute from a corner situation. Wu Lei did not participate in the ball dispute, but waited for his teammates to head, then he immediately shot into the close range to defeat goalkeeper Al Rashidi.

In the second half, Oman's tireless efforts paid off with Amjad Al-Harthi's equalizer. The player wearing the number 14 shirt bounced high and accurately headed, causing Yan Junling to go into the net to pick up the ball.

6. Iraq 1 - 1 Syria

  • Goal scorer(s): Omar Al-Soma (79’), Amir Al-Ammari (PEN - 86)
  • Red card, yellow card: Mustafa Nadhim (32’), Ahmed Ashkar (84’), Amir Al-Ammari (87’), Israa Hamwiah (90’), Mahmoud Al-Mawas (90’)

Both Iraq and Syria entered with a certain caution. In the early game, the two hardly advanced too much and played the ball at a slow pace.

Syria scored unexpectedly in the 79th minute thanks to Omar Al-Somah's movement. However, less than 10 minutes later, Iraq immediately had an answer with Amir Al Ammari's equalizer.

Amir Al Ammari's goal is also the goal that determines the score of this match. In the end, Iraq and Syria held each other with a 1-1 draw, thereby continuing to extend the unbeaten streak in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers in Asia to 5.
