City used clever tactics to keep Madrid at bay for the majority of the game, denying them a single shot on target for 89 minutes. Rodrygo beat Ederson to Karim Benzema's cutback with 90 minutes remaining to give the hosts hope, but time was still against them. So it seemed. Just a minute later, the substitute headed home Dani Carvajal's cross to level the score at 5-5 on aggregate – and even then, Ederson was called upon to prevent Rodrygo from scoring a hat-trick and forcing extra time.

Karim Benzema recovered from a Rben Dias foul just five minutes into the opening stanza to strike from the penalty spot and complete a spectacular comeback. To ensure no additional twists, Courtois was on hand to keep out Phil Foden's header.
