2021-2022 Premier League Week 24: Match Previews
Another amazing weekend with Premier League Week 23. Let's check our predictions for the upcoming matches!
Burnley vs Manchester United
After a 0-0 draw with Watford on Saturday, Burnley sit three points from safety with three games remaining. Despite Wout Weghorst making his first appearance for the club, Sean Dyche's squad lacked quality. Burnley's attacking performance was largely negative, and they were fortunate not to be punished for some defensive errors. Better teams will punish them, even if some say that United isn't one of them.
Despite totally dominating the encounter, Manchester United were knocked out of the FA Cup by Championship side Middlesbrough on Friday. They missed a penalty in normal time and a slew of other opportunities before succumbing to a blatant handball. Rangnick's United has struggled to score goals, with the Red Devils only scoring more than once in three of his 11 games in command.
Burnley has an abysmal home record against United. Robbie Blake was the last Burnley player to score against United at Turf Moor, and he did it in 2009. Since then, they have failed to score in six consecutive home encounters versus United.
Prediction: Burnley 0-1 Manchester United
Manchester City vs Brentford
Manchester City bounced back from a 1-1 draw with Southampton before the international break by thrashing Fulham 4-1 and securing a place in the FA Cup fifth round. City hasn't lost at home since a 2-0 setback to Crystal Palace at the end of October, and they're on a nine-game winning streak at the Etihad.
Brentford, on the other hand, is in serious danger, having suffered a 4-1 defeat against Everton on Saturday, their fifth defeat in a row. The Bees have won just two of their previous ten games, and have lost eight of them, so a trip to City isn't ideal.
In the middle of the week, City should have a reasonably easy 90 minutes.
Prediction: Manchester City 2-0 Brentford
Tottenham vs Southampton
Tottenham returned to domestic action after the international break with a 3-1 win over Brighton, ensuring a place in the FA Cup's next round. Spurs have now won four of their previous five home games, with only a 1-0 loss to Chelsea to their name.
Only one of Southampton's last eight competitive matches has ended in a loss, and that loss came on the road. Spurs had two second-half goals disallowed at St. Mary's, so they were fortunate to escape with a point in the reverse fixture.
Spurs have won their previous six home matches against Saints, and with key players returning, the north Londoners are decent value for all three points on Wednesday night.
Prediction: Tottenham 3-1 Southampton
Liverpool vs Leicester City
Liverpool beat Cardiff 3-1 in the FA Cup fifth round, but Leicester were thrashed 4-1 by Nottingham Forest, their local rivals.
In each of their last four away matches in all competitions, Leicester has conceded at least three goals. This isn't the kind of record you want to bring to Anfield.
Brendan Rodgers did recently lead his former club Liverpool to a 1-0 victory, but it was at Anfield. As an opposing manager, he has never won at Anfield.
Prediction: Liverpool 3-1 Leicester City
Wolves vs Arsenal
Wolves' four-game winning streak came to an end this weekend when they fell 1-0 at home to Norwich in the FA Cup fourth round. Bruno Lage will be hoping that the momentum gained during the winter break has not been squandered.
Arsenal fans were perplexed after seeing several first-team players go without receiving any new additions. The break came at a fortunate moment for them, as they had lost their previous five games.
In general, Premier League matches at the Molineux Stadium have been extremely close this season, and a score draw would not surprise anyone.
Prediction: Wolves 1-1 Arsenal
