Southampton 1-1 Tottenham
Saints took the lead through James Ward-Prowse (25), but Kane made no mistake from the penalty spot to bring Spurs level (41) after Mohammed Salisu was sent off for fouling Heung-Min Son inside the area.
When Kane collected Harry Winks' pass to fire past Fraser Forster, he felt he had completed the turnaround, but VAR intervened owing to a marginal offside against the forward.
The victory kept Antonio Conte unblemished in his first seven games as Tottenham manager - the first in the club's history - but it seemed like two points were dropped, as West Ham moved into the fifth position with a 4-1 win against Watford.
Southampton climbed up to 13th place ahead of the remaining midweek games after extending their unbeaten streak to three games.

Leicester City 1-0 Liverpool
Liverpool were defeated 1-0 by a weaker Leicester City team on Tuesday night, with Mohamed Salah missing a penalty.
Kasper Schmeichel, the home goalkeeper, was in superb form all evening, making a slew of saves after keeping Salah's penalty out from 12 yards.
Liverpool lost ground in the Premier League title battle, falling six points behind Manchester City at the halfway mark of the season, thanks to Ademola Lookman's second-half score.
The Foxes' makeshift defense held out for barely 14 minutes before Wilfred Ndidi lunged in on Salah in the box and the visitors were given a penalty.
Salah, on the other hand, was unable to convert the subsequent spot-kick, as well as the rebound, and the scores remained level.

Chelsea 1-1 Brighton
Chelsea were on the verge of triumph after surviving a barrage of Brighton pressure after Romelu Lukaku's first-half opening (26), but Welbeck's dramatic leveller (90+1), tapped in from Marc Cucurella's cross, startled them and earned a merited point for Graham Potter's side.
Chelsea suffered a big blow as a result of the outcome since they were not at their best and currently behind Manchester City by eight points after winning only one of their past four Premier League games.
As a protracted stretch of Brighton dominance during which they generated a succession of chances, it was thought they had weathered the storm after N'Golo Kante's entrance off the bench midway through the second half helped to shift the momentum in their favor.
However, Thomas Tuchel's side, who also lost Reece James and Andreas Christensen to hamstring and back injuries, missed several chances to extend their lead in the closing stages before Welbeck's towering header prompted wild Brighton celebrations, giving Manchester City a major boost and putting added emphasis on Chelsea's match against Liverpool, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports on Sunday.

Brentford 0-1 Manchester City
On a night where a dominant City side was frequently frustrated by a spirited display from the hosts, Foden converted Kevin De Bruyne's enticing cross with a composed first-time finish to break the deadlock in the 16th minute.
Brentford had twice come close to scoring seconds before the opener.
Ruben Dias' cross was diverted into his own net by Ederson's fine reflex stop, and the Brazilian then reached out a toe to deny the same man a shot following a corner.
After then, City were barely disturbed and, while facing a tenacious Bees' defense, could have won by more.
VAR ruled Foden and Aymeric Laporte's heads offside, and the striker was inches away from adding a second when he glanced another exquisite De Bruyne ball just wide, and the Belgian then saw a low effort from distance smash back against the post.

Manchester United 3-1 Burnley
Manchester United thrashed Burnley 3-1 on Thursday night, with goals from Scott McTominay and Cristiano Ronaldo.
McTominay opened the scoring for the hosts in the eighth minute, blasting in a stunning effort from the edge of the box for his first Premier League goal of the season.
Ben Mee got the smallest touch on Jadon Sancho's shot and deflected the ball past Wayne Hennessey to extend the hosts' lead. When McTominay's strike was deflected onto the post and rebounded out to Ronaldo, he was able to extend their lead even further.
Burnley had shown their teeth early in the game, with Chris Wood coming close with a header, and they got a goal back when Aaron Lennon went free and sliced a drive across David de Gea and into the far corner.
United moves up to sixth place in the table, while Burnley remains in 18th place, two points from safety, despite having four games in hand.
