2. Highlights

Inter Milan brought the weight of a long historical drought against Spanish teams to the Bernabéu on Tuesday night in a match to determine the Champions League Group D winners, and they left with that record extended but their pride intact after taking Real Madrid to the wire in a high-pressing game settled by two wonderful strikes from Toni Kroos and Marco Asensio.

In a first half that the visitors won on points, Inter boss Simone Inzaghi deployed an attacking 5-3-2 and rushed for every ball, the sole flaw on their game plan being Kroos' superbly taken goal against the run of play.

Inter had chances after the interval, but two incidents thwarted their efforts: Nicoló Barella's red card for slapping Éder Milito and Asensio's miraculous goal seconds after coming on, the Spaniard beating Handanovic with a wonderfully timed strike into the top corner.

Inzaghi's gung-ho style resulted in his team having more efforts than Madrid, but they only got two on target, both of which were dealt with by Thibaut Courtois, who was otherwise unfazed.

On another night, the Serie A side might have equalized, or even beaten Madrid for the first time in nearly 50 years, but Carlo Ancelotti has built a machine that is more than the sum of its parts, and one that didn't miss its talisman Karim Benzema too much.

Luka Jovic stepped up to fill the breach, earning the Bernabéu's praise for a sleeve-rolled-up performance, but it was Milito's defensive display that kept Madrid afloat at one end, while Kroos and Asensio’s uncanny ability to locate a gap with a long-range effort buried Inter at the other.
